FOSS Principles and FOSS Licenses

The ability to use, alter, distribute, and research software is at the heart of the free and open-source software (FOSS) movement. Open-source software emphasises transparency and collaboration, while free software emphasises user freedom. FOSS licenses typically fall into one of three categories: copyleft, which mandates that derivative works must also be open; permissive, which gives users more freedom in terms of how they use and alter the program; or copyright-based, which gives users particular rights while retaining more control over the program. Community-driven development and creativity are propelled by these licenses and guiding principles.
